More Asians Rockin' America
HAITI - Food, water, shelter, sickness, and death continue to be urgent problems even with an estimated 16,000 grounded US forces delivering aid to the double earthquake stricken Haiti. The 7.0 quake that shook Port-au-Prince on January 12th killed approximately 200,000 people, injured 250,000 and left 1.5 million homeless. Just eight days later, a 5.8 aftershock (revised from 6.1) trembled Haiti about 36 miles west of the capital. More aftershocks could follow within the next 30 days. The NYC Soho International Film Festival starts today! Runs Feb 18-21

Founded by Jorge Ballos, Noli Parumog and Luis Pedron on July 1, 2009, the Soho International Film Festival (SIFF) encourages new and seasoned filmmakers to create innovative and thought provoking pieces.

SIFF host screenings and events in the renowned SOHO district of New York City to bring together filmmakers, critics, and cineastes from across the world.  Filmmaking seminars will be conducted by film experts and nightly after parties will be held. The festival is open to Features/Shorts/Music Videos of all Genres (Professional, Amateur, Work-in-Progress and Student Films)

One of the features that hooked me:
Autism: Made in the USA

Autism. What is it and why is it on the rise? In this feature length documentary presentation, award winning executive producer Gary Null is on a quest to reveal the true causes and promising solutions for the recent dramatic increase in autism in our children. Is autism related to environmental factors?

Could it be caused by mercury, aluminum, viruses, or other toxins contained in the 40-odd vaccines that every American child must receive? What are other environmental or genetic factors which could be contributing to the epidemic increase in childhood autism?

In this pioneering educational film, Dr. Null will be interviewing some of the world’s leading experts on childhood autism. A full spectrum of medical and scientific views will be presented, both orthodox and nontraditional, to get at the real reasons behind this childhood scourge. Novel effective therapies will be explored, showing that both the problem and solution of autism could be linked to weakened childhood immune systems, the inability of some children to rid their bodies of heavy metals and injected viruses, and unusual reactions to environmental toxins, foods, and proteins.

The film will consider that there are successful biomedical treatments for autism including utilizing special dietary supplements and gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF) diets, as well as chelation and hyperbaric oxygen therapies. Some of these natural solutions are being challenged by the pharmaceutical industry as unproven. But, could it be that the drug companies stand too much to lose from a more critical scrutiny of our national policy of compulsory vaccinations for infants and children? These and other important issues woven into the fabric of the autism debate will be examined in detail in this film.

A couple of others that caught my attention…

2010 - The Year of the Tiger

Feb 14, 2010 through Feb 2, 2011

CLSA via WSJ: “Tiger years are typically marked by dramatic changes and even upheaval and 2010, much like the tiger itself, sees an energetic and powerful, but impulsive and risky, year ahead.”

NYPost: An Indian tiger swims at the Bangkok Zoo. Demand from a newly rich Asian population for goods such as tiger bone tonic wine and tigers’ skin, meat and teeth is putting pressure on these endangered creatures worldwide.

Business
Per the WSJ, Feb 13, 2010, 12:09pm EST: Interesting short read, by the way, I recommend checking out the full article.

The Year of the Tiger is set to deliver gains to investors, but also volatility and it may be a boon for precious metals, according to feng shui analysis by CLSA. The brokerage firm is careful to characterize its report as “tongue-in-cheek,” but the fact is that many investors and business people in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan take feng shui and Chinese astrology very seriously.

Overall the outlook is bullish, with especially strong gains expected from September through the end of the year.

Tradition
From Blogher.com:

Clean house … literally. The house should be cleaned from top to bottom before the start of the New Year. If you can’t manage that, the least you must do is sweep the floors. By sweeping up the floor, you’re getting rid of your old luck and allowing for your new luck to flow into the house.

Pay off your debts.
Obviously, not all debts can be paid off in one fail swoop. These days, we just make sure all our bills are paid and sent out before Chinese New Year day. Once again, it’s all about making sure your old debts and old luck are out the door so you can welcome in new wealth and luck. It’s kind of like starting out fresh.

Wear something lucky.
Either something new, something red, or both: Red is the most honored color to the Chinese. It’s a symbol of wealth, luck, happiness and prosperity. Wearing something new is once again starting off fresh for the New Year. And with the date falling on Valentine’s Day this year, it all works out perfectly.

Do nothing.
On Chinese New Year day you’re not supposed to lift a finger. Yup, you lay around all day, invite friends and family over, and just eat leftovers. Kind of sounds like Thanksgiving, doesn’t it? We do this because you’re not supposed to use any knives (you don’t want to cut off your luck, do you?), go near an open flame (bad luck), or wash anything (you’ll wash away your new luck!). No dishes. No laundry. Technically, you’re not supposed to wash your hair, but that’s not always a good idea these days.

Conservation
From the guardian.co.uk:

Since the last tiger year, in 1998, the wild population of the animal worldwide has almost halved to about 3,200 due to habitat loss, economic development, and poaching for hides and traditional medicine.

Many of these animals are isolated from one another by roads and railways, making it difficult for them to breed.

The conservation group WWF warns that the animal may be extinct in the wild in China within three decades if current trends continue. The tiger is the group’s priority for 2010.

NYPost: Three white tigers gather in an enclosure at the Singapore zoological garden. For the first time, to mark the Year of the Tiger, visitors will get the opportunity to go behind the scenes to see how the white tigers are trained using conditioning to provide mental and behavioral stimulation for the animals. There are fewer than 50 wild tigers left in China today, living in Yunnan, Tibet, Jilin and Helongjiang, according to Xie Yan, the China program director of the Wildlife Conservation Society. Best friendships are with those born in the year of the Horse, Dog, or Dragon
Best partners are with those born in the year of the Horse, Dog, Dragon, Pig, and Rabbit

The strength of Tigers makes them dynamic and courageous. Outspoken on every subject, they are still tolerant and sensitive to the opinions of others. Kind to their fellows, Tigers can be short-tempered if they don’t get their way. The Tiger balances between the passions and demands of the outside world and the comfort of home. They tend to be philosophers with great intellect and think most about themselves and their families. Protecting their interests and loved ones to the utmost, they are generous with their love and affection.

Tigers are fighters. They fight not only with the outside world, they also spar with themselves. They are always seeking the balance between their search for inner and outer peace on the one hand, and their career-driven mind on the other. They will walk through a fire for the right cause, and are not afraid to appear rebellious when they believe in ideas that go against the majority. Tigers will support everything and everyone they choose — in love, career, friends, etc. As friends, colleagues and lovers, they are loyal to the death … and even after. People admire the stripes of the tiger, their look and their talents, but are always a bit on edge with them, as one never knows exactly how a Tiger will react.

Pros: Tigers are incredibly sexy people, beautiful to most people and sensually romantic.  The Tiger can be lovable, alluring, warm-hearted, altruistic, honorable, hard-working, pleasant, independent, engaging, dynamic, idealist, and sweet.

Cons: The Tiger can be rash, hot-headed, reckless, infatuated, quarrelsome, caustic, moody, predatory, rebellious, disobedient and irreverent rascals.  Tigers are especially turned off by not getting enough recognition for their efforts, being inferior to others at work, or impolite people.

Occupations: Tigers make excellent Actors, Comedians, Chauffeurs, Musicians, Race Car Drivers, Pilots, Artists, Writers, Flight Attendants, Travel Agents, Advertising Agents, Office Managers

Andrew Garcia.  American Idol Season 9 early favorite.  Not surprised.  His acoustic rendition of Paula Adul’s Straight Up gave me chills and made me pretty emotional.    Dayum.

Simon: “The only person who’s walked through today who I genuinley believe is a good singer…a genuinely, genuinely, good, good singer…and I can tell you like music, it was a good choice…it’s a very difficult song to sing in this kind of situation…I think you’re a really, really good singer, Andrew, and I’m glad I met you…”  Note: Simon repeats to emphasize.

Though not confirmed on any primary sources (My Space or Idol site), my best guess is that Garcia is of Hispanic descent, while his girlfriend/baby mama, Christine Conception, is of Filipino descent.  Let’s see if factual info emerges anywhere…anyone want to ask them on twitter

Anyhooo…check Garcia’s Idol audition below, which includes clips and stills of his family, his cutie son, Caeland (pretty cool name, by the whhey), and a quick clip of his Christine.  He samples Maroon 5’s Sunday Morning.

Here’s a SICK Fugees, MJ and more medley with Garcia on guitar and Lydia Paek (who’s also been circulating on the interwebz.  She is a dancer, as well as a singer, and is of Korean descent.) on vocals.

Here’s Garcia doing Fireflies as a duet with his girlfriend, baby mama, Christine Conception.

Who’s the Asian Temple boss on ‘Lost: The Final Season’?

Are we supposed to surmise he’s Japanese because he keeps a Bonsai Tree and won’t speak English because the language tastes bad in his mouth?  (Ok, fine.  He speaks Japanese too.)

(This is from tonight’s episode ‘What Kate Does”)

So…he’s also barefoot.  Why is everyone barefoot? Is that supposed to add to the mystery?  Or make them more earthy and hippie-like?  Eh.  Iz cool.  I’m down.  Let’s see what happens…

(So is this one!)

This new badass Temple boss is Dogen, played by veteran actor and only Japanese actor ever to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company Hiroyuki Sanada.  You might recognize him from his roles in films such as The Last Samurai, Sunshine, and Rush Hour 3.  Sanada will next star opposite Anthony Hopkins in James Ivory’s The City of Your Final Destination, out in March 2010.
