Rosalind Chao

famousfilipinos:

Rosalind Chao
(IPA: /rɒzʌlɪnd tʃaʊ/)[1] (born September 23, 1959 (1959-09-23))[2][3] is an American actress born in Anaheim, California to Chinese parents; she is married to voice actor Simon Templeman.[2]

Chao first came on the scene as Klinger’s love on M*A*S*H.  I remember thinking how cool it was to see an Asian woman on TV.  I only realize now that it was not only because she was so pretty to look at, but also because an Asian female having a relatively prominent role on a popular prime time show in America was to be acknowledged.   Asian.  Female.  Existence.  (Anyone recall the one-child rule in China and how many female babies were…”discouraged”?)

Having seen and remembered Chao from Anna and the King,[4]television producer Burt Metcalfe provided her big break with the role of Soon-Lee, a South Korean refugee, in the final episodes of the TV series M*A*S*H.[2] Soon-Lee married longtime starring character Maxwell Klinger (Jamie Farr) in the series finale “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen”,[7] the most-watched television episode of all time (as of 2009). Chao continued playing the character in the M*A*S*H sequel: 1983’s AfterMASH, her first role billed at co-starring status.[8]

Other main roles in recognizable films/tv include: I Am Sam, Joy Luck Club, What Dreams May Come, The West Wing, Grey’s Anatomy, Six Feet Under, ER, The OC, Dharma & Greg, The A Team, Falcon Crest, Incredible Hulk…More here
