Maya Lin unveils “Unchopping A Tree”
Tuesday, December 16, Copenhagen – Cop15, United Nations Climate Change Conference
Maya Lin, world-renowned artist and architect who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, unveiled the latest piece in her inform-and-inspire conservation efforts. In the video, Lin asks, “if deforestation were happening in your city? How quickly would you work to stop it?”
Lin timed the debut to coincide with the Support REDD+ Gala in Copenhagen to highlight the importance of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation. “I want to get out the message that by preventing deforestation, we can reduce emissions and save species,” said Lin.
This poignant and powerful piece is the latest in Lin’s multi-sited and final memorial, What is Missing?
[The] project [is] being built to draw global attention to the crisis surrounding biodiversity and habitat loss. The memorial is being constructed with both virtual and physical works that blend science with art, drawing on contributions from individuals and artists around the globe. Part wake-up call, part call to action, What is Missing? is intended both to inform and inspire. The project will draw special attention to the links among endangered species, habitat loss, and climate change.
