Filipino White House Chef draws attention to healthy eating

Only one more month till we see Filipino White House Chef, Cristeta Comerford, in an Iron Chef America challenge against renowned chefs Bobby Flay, Mario Batalli, and Emeril Legasse.  First Lady, Michelle Obama, will make a cameo appearance introducing the secret ingredient: anything grown in the 1,100 square foot White House garden.

The White House approached the Food Network about filming “Iron Chef America” at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. as a way to reach those people who haven’t heard yet about the first lady’s efforts to curb childhood obesity through healthy eating and exercise, the New York Times reports.

Actress Jane Seymour, food writer and journalist Nigella Lawson, and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Natalie Coughlin will judge.  The episode will air Jan 3, 2010 on The Food Network @8pm/ET. [Note: Coughlin is Filipino too (part)]

Comerford was hired at the White House in 1995 as an assistant and became the first woman and Filipino to hold the White House Chef position when she was hired by Laura Bush in 2005.  Sharing the perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families, Michelle Obama announced that Comerford would remain as White House Chef in early 2009.  More on Comerford.

This just in: Pacquiao to run for congress seat in Philippines

Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, left, stands beside wife Jinky as he shows the certificate of candidacy for congress which he filed at the provincial capitol in Sarangani province, southern Philippines on Tuesday Dec. 1, 2009. Pacquiao, considered the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer for winning the championship in seven weight classes, will be having his second jab at politics after his 2007 campaign fell short. (AP Photo)

Click here for the Associated Press article

Some quick facts:

  • This is Pacquiao’s second attempt at office (he was defeated in 2007 in General Santos City)
  • Unclear if he will fight Mayweather Jr. if he wins Congress
  • Pacquiao is the first boxer to win 7 world titles in 7 different weight classes (after defeating Miguel Cotto on Sat, Nov. 14 (see pics from the fight here)

I have some concerns - mainly that he maintains focus to defeat Mayweather if he does decide to fight him.  Also wondering if Pacquiao wants to run because he has a genuine agenda to help the people and if he has trustworthy advisors to help strategize and execute programs that address hunger, health, education, and poverty (these, to me, are the biggest problems concerning the Philippines).  Or are the people behind him utilizing his platform for their own, selfish motives, without genuine concern or care for addressing the issues?

What do you think about this? (Feel free to comment below.  Can be anonymous or you can sign in with an AKA…coolio.)

The Pixies on Jimmy Fallon 11/24

performing “Debaser” (above) and “Hey” (below) - two of my faves - the latter was the one that got me hooked in 1990…checked in and never left

Incredible range in the types of music, song, and lyrics.  How they play is different yet fuckin SLAMMIN - every. single. time.

Watching & hearing this performance is making me seriously consider trying to find last minute tix to tonight’s late show @ Hammerstein starting at 11:45pm (Pixies would go on at 1am) - It’s their LAST show in NYC for this tour!!!!

Already saw the first at Hammerstein NYC on Mon, 11/23 (go to home page and scroll down to see pics, set list, vids)…It was FANTASTIC! but also…

Honestly such a mind fuck.  Their songs are full, but short.  So I’m built up, brought to the max, then boom-done.  (Yeah I know.)  They were around from ‘89-‘93, broke up for 11 or so years, then back in NYC in 2004…then had to wait another 5 years for them to come around again.  Dude, touch me in the morning then just walk away.

So amazing to hear them live…but I’m always left wanting more.  Maybe I’m just addicted.  No wait…that’s not a maybe.

Are you kidding me with the Black Francis and Kim Deals vocals, Joey’s guitar, Kim’s guitar, and Lovering’s drumming?!? Eat, Drink, Man, Woman…Pixies.

This is how I feel about them right now.

Here they are performing fan requested “Hey”

CNN November 22, 2009—

Efren Peñaflorida, who started a “pushcart classroom” in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership, has been named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper revealed Peñaflorida’s selection at the conclusion of the third-annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night.

The gala event, taped before an audience of 3,000 at the Kodak Theatre, premieres on Thanksgiving, November 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

Peñaflorida, who will receive $100,000 to continue his work with the Dynamic Teen Company, was selected after seven weeks of online voting at CNN.com. More than 2.75 million votes were cast.
