More Asians Rockin' America
HAITI - Food, water, shelter, sickness, and death continue to be urgent problems even with an estimated 16,000 grounded US forces delivering aid to the double earthquake stricken Haiti. The 7.0 quake that shook Port-au-Prince on January 12th killed approximately 200,000 people, injured 250,000 and left 1.5 million homeless. Just eight days later, a 5.8 aftershock (revised from 6.1) trembled Haiti about 36 miles west of the capital. More aftershocks could follow within the next 30 days. The NYC Soho International Film Festival starts today! Runs Feb 18-21

Founded by Jorge Ballos, Noli Parumog and Luis Pedron on July 1, 2009, the Soho International Film Festival (SIFF) encourages new and seasoned filmmakers to create innovative and thought provoking pieces.

SIFF host screenings and events in the renowned SOHO district of New York City to bring together filmmakers, critics, and cineastes from across the world.  Filmmaking seminars will be conducted by film experts and nightly after parties will be held. The festival is open to Features/Shorts/Music Videos of all Genres (Professional, Amateur, Work-in-Progress and Student Films)

One of the features that hooked me:
Autism: Made in the USA

Autism. What is it and why is it on the rise? In this feature length documentary presentation, award winning executive producer Gary Null is on a quest to reveal the true causes and promising solutions for the recent dramatic increase in autism in our children. Is autism related to environmental factors?

Could it be caused by mercury, aluminum, viruses, or other toxins contained in the 40-odd vaccines that every American child must receive? What are other environmental or genetic factors which could be contributing to the epidemic increase in childhood autism?

In this pioneering educational film, Dr. Null will be interviewing some of the world’s leading experts on childhood autism. A full spectrum of medical and scientific views will be presented, both orthodox and nontraditional, to get at the real reasons behind this childhood scourge. Novel effective therapies will be explored, showing that both the problem and solution of autism could be linked to weakened childhood immune systems, the inability of some children to rid their bodies of heavy metals and injected viruses, and unusual reactions to environmental toxins, foods, and proteins.

The film will consider that there are successful biomedical treatments for autism including utilizing special dietary supplements and gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF) diets, as well as chelation and hyperbaric oxygen therapies. Some of these natural solutions are being challenged by the pharmaceutical industry as unproven. But, could it be that the drug companies stand too much to lose from a more critical scrutiny of our national policy of compulsory vaccinations for infants and children? These and other important issues woven into the fabric of the autism debate will be examined in detail in this film.

A couple of others that caught my attention…

Who's the Asian Temple boss on 'Lost: The Final Season'?

Are we supposed to surmise he’s Japanese because he keeps a Bonsai Tree and won’t speak English because the language tastes bad in his mouth?  (Ok, fine.  He speaks Japanese too.)

(This is from tonight’s episode ‘What Kate Does”)

So…he’s also barefoot.  Why is everyone barefoot? Is that supposed to add to the mystery?  Or make them more earthy and hippie-like?  Eh.  Iz cool.  I’m down.  Let’s see what happens…

(So is this one!)

This new badass Temple boss is Dogen, played by veteran actor and only Japanese actor ever to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company Hiroyuki Sanada.  You might recognize him from his roles in films such as The Last Samurai, Sunshine, and Rush Hour 3.  Sanada will next star opposite Anthony Hopkins in James Ivory’s The City of Your Final Destination, out in March 2010.

Daniel Dae Kim stays on the island for Hawaii Five-O remake

Congrats!!! to Korean talent (and hottie) Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin Kwon on ABC’s hit show Lost, for landing one of the leading roles in CBS’ remake of the groovy classic Hawaii Five-O.  Kim will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly while Moonlight star Alex O’Loughlin continues to be in talks for the part of Detective Steve McGarrett.

Kim’s POV on Asians in acting per the latest issue of DaMan magazine:

“I take a little bit of pride in that I don’t feel like I’ve taken any roles that I regret in terms of cultural representation…I’ve never done the stereotypicalAsian nerd or anything like that. But that’s not to say that there isn’t that kind of dynamic in Hollywood. There is definitely a categorization of Asian males, in particular. What I mean to say is though the roles might not be overtly offensive, they are definitely secondary and exist only to serve another character. For instance, a lot of roles that I have played have been in support of the leads and I was there to deliver exposition. They’re not stereotypical roles but they are representative of a ceiling that a lot of us face.”

The remake features writers and “Fringe” co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and “CSI: NY” executive producer/co-showrunner Peter Lenkov.

THR
reports that Kim is the “first actor from the show’s core cast to book a new series project this pilot season as the ABC mystery drama heads to its May finale.”  The 2nd episode of this 6th and FINAL (sigh) season airs tonight on ABC @ 9pmET.
