More Asians Rockin' America
HAITI - Food, water, shelter, sickness, and death continue to be urgent problems even with an estimated 16,000 grounded US forces delivering aid to the double earthquake stricken Haiti. The 7.0 quake that shook Port-au-Prince on January 12th killed approximately 200,000 people, injured 250,000 and left 1.5 million homeless. Just eight days later, a 5.8 aftershock (revised from 6.1) trembled Haiti about 36 miles west of the capital. More aftershocks could follow within the next 30 days. In high school, Ling was student body president and president of German Club, Amnesty International, Literature Society and Junior Statesmen Debate Team. She competed in dance, varsity tennis and swimming. In 1997, Congressman David Dreier recognized Ling for her community service at the local hospital. At age 16, she was selected as a state finalist in the Miss America Pageant and after nine years of playing the piano, graduated from the Royal Board of Music. She graduated high school second in her class with a 4.0 GPA and perfect SAT scores.Pursuing a career in medicine, Ling majored in biomedical chemical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. Over the next two years, she starred in over 20 independent short films and returned to prime time television in roles on House (FOX) and ER (NBC) in 2006. She guest starred in the recurring role of Kim Tao on the critically acclaimed Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip (NBC). Her next major guest starring role was on the television drama ER, playing the recurring character of Mae Lee Park, a surgical intern. In addition, her Kung Fu performance, portraying her as an adventurer ambushed by bandits, won her the Best Acting Award. She was unable to compete in Beijing because of her role as Anna Wu on NBC’s Chuck.

Nikki Soohoo

is an Asian American actress (specific ethnicity unconfirmed) who most recently appears in the film based on Alice Sebold’s novel, The Lovely Bones, in theaters this Friday, December 11th.

“It is the story of a teenage girl [Susie] who, after being brutally raped and murdered, watches from heaven as her family and friends go on with their lives, while she herself comes to terms with her own death.”

Oscar nominated (at 13yo for Atonement) Saoirse Ronan plays Susie, while Soohoo plays her best friend Holly.  The film also stars Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci, and Michael Imperioli.  (With Lord of the Rings’ Peter Jackson directing an awesome cast, an intriguing plot, and my lust for vintage costume design…I’m looking forward to seeing this.)

Soohoo
, who started out in television and crossed over to film, is most likely best known for playing gymnast Wei Wei in the 2006 Disney movie, Stick It, and for playing one of the main three cheerleaders in the 5th installment of the Bring It On series, Bring It On: Fight to the Finish.  Soohoo was born August 20, 1988 and is currently attending UCLA in California.

Can you guess which Asian actress was in the 1st Bring It OnClickit
Also, here’s an actor who shares the same last name who starred with Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder

Reese wowed Pattie La Belle, Natalie Cole, Earth Wind and Fire, Jamie Foxx, and Will.I.Am (of the Black Eyed Peas, who boasts Filipino group member APL), when she performed powerful renditions of Classical Broadway and Opera songs to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the famous Beverly Hills Crustacean Restaurant in June 2008.    Oliver Stone, Angela Basset, Magic Johnson, San Fransisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsom, Michael Bolton, and Paris Hilton were also among the crowd who stood to applaud, cheer, and throw flowers at Reese’s feet before she even finished singing.  Patti La Belle was so impressed that she invited Reese to dine with her in the VIP room.  They sang the end of Puccini’s Nessun Dorma together, at La Belle’s request, and brought the crowd to screams and cheers once again.  (Read more about Reese taking Hollywood by storm.)Here is a Reese rendition of the above mentioned aria.  Performed July 4, 2009 at the Fil-Am Friendship Day at Redwing Park Virginia Beach, VA.

Sonja Sohn

was most recently on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters.  Sohn played a pregnant doctor who chose Kitty and Robert McCallister (played by Calista Flockhart and Rob Lowe) to adopt her baby.

Sohn is an American actress of Korean and East African descent.  She won the “Best Supporting Television Actress” Asian Excellence Award in 2008 for her role as Detective Kima Greggs on the hit HBO series, The Wire

You know what else rocks? Sohn also has a talent for slam poetry.  Sohn wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the script for the 1998 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Slam; which I am now going to Q.  I wonder if the words will give me the same rush as the beats in Drumline.

Fame this weekend?

Baby look at me
And tell me what you see
You ain’t seen the best of me yet
Give me time
I’ll make you forget the rest….

I can catch the moon in my hand
Don’t you know who I am
Remember my name

Fame!
I’m gonna live forever
I’m gonna learn how to fly
High!

I’m gonna make it to heaven
light up the sky like a flame
Fame!

Rememba
Rememba
Rememba

Remember?!?!?

Fame may be a remake of the old story, but with 25 year-old dance prodigy and famed choreographer to Madonna and Britney Spears, Kevin Tancharoen, directing, Debbie Allen, Bebe Neuwirth, Megan Mullally, and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle in the ensemble…we may have a new cast of contending talent to be excited about.  Check out the trailer on you tube.

PS - Researching Kevin’s ethnic background, I found that he is the brother of one ‘Maurissa Tancharoen’…yeah and? Who the heck is ‘Maurissa’? (her name was literally in quotes…do single quote marks mean the referenced is also famed?)

Turns out ‘Maurissa’ is Maurissa Tancharoen Whedon, contributing writer to Dollhouse and sister-in-law of its genius writer, producer, director, Joss Whedon, also of Firefly and Serenity magnificence.  Maurissa identifies Tancharoen as having Thai roots.  Rock on, Maurissa and Joss, for writing such intriguing and thought-provoking female roles…not to mention casting beauteous, talented actors to portray them.

Lachman was born on Feb 22, 1982 in Kathmandu, Nepal and lived there until she was 7yo before moving to Adelaide, Australia.  She is of Tibetan (maternal) and Australian (not a bloodline, I know, but that’s the avail info) descent.

Okay what? Asian girl sporting an Aussie accent? HOT.  She’s Tibetan.  Even HOTTER.   Lands a role in one of Joss Whedon’s creations? ROCKET HOT.
